CIKA funds the purchase of an A80 freezer

CIKA is most grateful to the following groups for providing the necessary funds.

Williamstown Rotary Club Friends R 4

A chance meeting by CIKA member Fred Bergman has led to a generous donation to the Cancer In Kids Auxiliary at The Royal Children's Hospital, enabling the purchase, on a dollar for dollar basis, of an A-80 C freezer to be used for biological research.

Through a business meeting Fred meet Dr Roland (Ronnie) Goldberg OAM, Chairperson of the Rotary project "Friends R 4".

Ronnie became very interested in the work that CIKA funded and, after a meeting with lead researcher Dr Denise Caruso, he offered his support to assist in meeting the urgent requirement for this freezer for the research lab at the Children's Cancer Centre.

The A-80 freezer is vital for biological research. This super freezer enables researchers to store cell samples from patients in an inactive state for an indefinite amount of time. The cell samples can subsequently be thawed carefully to ensure their viability, and used for diagnostic research and clinical applications.

Over the last year Ronnie has spent many hours presenting his case for funding for the freezer to several benefactors and on Monday the 7th of December, in conjunction with Murray Verso, Past President of the Williamstown Rotary Club, he presented Sandra Lehrer, President of CIKA, with a cheque for $13,000.00.

The CIKA team appreciate the terrific effort that Ronnie put in to achieve this great result and, together with donations of $5,500 from The Macedon Ranges Focus Group, $1000 from Andy and Gwen Kakafikis, $1000 from The Woodpeckers and $5,500 from the Old Time Wood Days annual event held in November, we were able to provide the $26,000.00 required to purchase this important piece of equipment.

Denise Caruso BS PhD Senior Research Officer at the Children's Cancer Centre has asked that her thanks be extended to all those that participated in this fundraising activity.

Macedon Ranges Focus Group

A major event on the CIKA calendar is the annual Macedon Ranges Focus Group’s Christmas party. Focus has been a major sponsor of CIKA for over 12 years and, whilst their monthly activities are varied, their main endeavours are directed to supporting the funding that CIKA contributes to the RCH.

Members of the CIKA team have been attending the Focus Christmas lunch over many years and it is always a good time to catch up with old friends, enjoy the visit from Santa, sing some carols and enjoy a lovely meals with good company.

Whilst the Focus group was formed primarily to encourage friendship, education and socialization between the women of the Macedon Ranges their endeavours over many years have resulted in generous financial support to CIKA.

This year was no exception and President Chris Rhodes presented CIKA with a cheque for $5,500.00. This was an exceptional fundraising effort with and all the Focus members were pleased that this money would be allocated to assist with the purchase of a freezer for the research laboratory at the Children's Cancer Center.

Andy and Gwen Kakafikas

As always, Focus loves to surprise us and Vice President, Gwen Kakafikas, stepped forward and, on behalf of her husband and herself, presented a cheque for $1000.00.

Andy and Gwen are the owners of TBS ( Aust ), importers and wholesalers of curtain and blind hardware, and when Gwen held the position of Focus President she attended several CIKA functions, and hence is very aware of the work that we do. Unfortunately our photographer was not able to capture Gwen's presentation of the cheque to our president.

A formal “thank-you” seems to be a small token for the great support that Focus makes on our behalf, but all who attend any of their functions are aware of the generosity of this group of women.

The Woodpeckers

The last Woodpeckers golf day for 2009 was played at the Sandhurst golf club on the 3rd of December. A large crowd of furniture-industry representatives enjoyed a great but windy game of golf and later gathered at the clubhouse for fellowship and an evening meal.

The Woodpeckers are major sponsors of CIKA and, after a video presentation of CIKA's work, President Sandra gave a short overview of the status of the research that CIKA is funding.

As always, the ever-generous Woodpeckers dug deep and after several raffles a thousand dollars was secured to assist in the purchase of the freezer.

The CIKA team appreciate the support that Gerald Meade gives to CIKA. Gerald spent some time discussing the work that CIKA does and encouraged the furniture industry to get behind CIKA in 2010 for its 39th birthday.
